Here’s a really great article by Dan Hyman about how broke indie artists who are expected to make their money on the road cope when their gear gets stolen. This story has been in the works for a while now - Dan did a lot of research and reporting, and it’s all at the service of some really good storytelling that gets at the core of why the epidemic of instrument theft is such a problem for young musicians. Like, Tom Petty and even Sonic Youth can just go buy some more guitars, but for people just starting out, this could kill your career.
